Sharpened Pencils & Fresh Starts

Spread the love

It’s that time of year when lunchboxes start making their grand reappearance, pencils smell suspiciously like they’re fresh from the factory, and the air just feels like… back-to-school season.

Here in Broward County, Florida, today is the big day. My little Sarai is heading into elementary school, and if excitement had a volume knob, she’d be on max!

As I lay here before the morning rush, my mind is like a movie reel, rewinding through the years. First gummy smile… first wobbly step… first “Why is the sky blue?” question… and now, first day of elementary school. Oh, my heart. I can’t help but whisper, Thank You, Lord.

The Bible says,

“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23).

A new school year is like a brand-new page in a fresh notebook — crisp, unmarked, and brimming with possibilities. God’s mercies work the same way. He gives us fresh starts, not just every school year, but every single morning.

I’m reminded too that “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). For some, summer is still in full swing; for others, the backpacks are already in motion. God designed each season — whether it’s the restful slowdown of summer or the focused rhythm of school — to grow us in different ways.

To my fellow parents, teachers, and students — whether you’ve already started or you’re counting down the days — let’s step into this next chapter with Proverbs 4:7 in mind —

“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”

Whether it’s math equations, science projects, or learning how to make a new friend, wisdom is the true gold we’re mining for.

And for anyone feeling a bit nervous? (Yes, parents, I’m looking at us!) Let’s hold on to Philippians 4:13 —

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Even the 7 a.m. drop-off line. Even the homework help that makes you Google “How to do fractions” at 9 p.m.

So here’s to new beginnings, sharpened pencils, open hearts, and a God whose faithfulness makes every season beautiful.

Happy back-to-school season — whenever it arrives for you! May your days ahead be full of learning, laughter, and little reminders that God’s mercies are new every morning — and every school year too.
