If I Live…

Spread the love

I sat in bed, wide awake but exhausted, staring at the ceiling like it had answers.

My room was quiet, but my mind wasn’t.

I kept saying it.

Over and over.

Slowly.

Almost afraid of it.

“If I live…” ❓⁉️❔

Not if I succeed.

Not if I get better.

Not if things go my way.

Just—if I live.⁉️⁉️⁉️

Paul’s words had found me, the way Scripture does when it’s done waiting politely and decides to sit beside you instead.

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

I whispered it again.

If I live…⁉️

If God lets me wake up today,

If my heart keeps beating,

If my lungs keep doing their quiet, faithful work—

Then my life isn’t mine to decorate, protect, or delay.

If I live, it’s Christ.

Not Christ as an accessory.

Not Christ as a Sabbath appearance.

Not Christ when it’s convenient or safe.

But Christ as the reason.

The rhythm.

The assignment.

That realization was sobering—and freeing all at once.

Because suddenly, living wasn’t about longevity.

It was about purpose. 🤔

And dying—well, Paul says that’s gain.

That part used to unsettle me.

Now it steadies me.

Because gain doesn’t mean escape.

It means fulfillment.

Completion.

Rest after obedience.

Paul wasn’t depressed.

He wasn’t giving up.

He was simply unafraid to lose what he had already surrendered.

And that’s when it hit me.

The fear I’ve been wrestling with hasn’t been death.

It’s been fully living for Christ.

Living boldly.

Praying dangerously.

Trusting deeply.

Obeying without needing a backup plan.

So I sat there, wrapped in my blanket like armor, and let the words finish themselves:

  • If I live… let it count.
  • If I live… let it bear fruit.
  • If I live… let it be Christ.

And if I die?

God has already promised—that will be gain.

This morning, like Paul, I’m choosing not to be afraid of either.

I didn’t come with answers this morning.

I didn’t come with resolutions or a checklist.

I just stopped by to say this:

If you must live—live for something eternal.

If you must breathe—breathe with purpose.

If God has given you another day—don’t spend it surviving.

Live like Christ is the reason you’re still here.

Not louder.

Not busier.

Just truer.

Let your life bear fruit where you are planted.

Let your prayers stretch past what feels safe.

Let your obedience speak before your fear does.

And today, maybe your only prayer is this:

“Lord, if I live… let it be You.”

Sit with that.

Carry it with you.

Tomorrow—we’ll talk about what it means when Paul says,

“To die is gain.”
