I recently felt like I was part of a chess game I didn’t ask to play.
Not the queen—oh no. That piece was protected. Guarded. Preserved.
I felt like the bishop… or maybe the knight.
Valuable. Strategic. Positioned with purpose.
And yet—sacrificed.
It stung. Not because I need a crown, but because I know my value. I know the quiet work, the behind-the-scenes strategy, the hours of investment that may not make the highlight reel but shift the whole board.
♘ The Quiet Value of the Knight
In chess, the knight moves differently. It doesn’t follow the crowd—it jumps. It pivots. It surprises. And it can reach places the queen can’t. Same for the bishop—covering great distances with precision, seeing diagonals others miss.
But too often, we protect what looks powerful instead of what’s purposeful. We guard the queen and gamble with the rest. We make moves to impress, forgetting the ones who helped clear the path.
And isn’t that what life can feel like sometimes?
In leadership. In friendships. In ministry. In family.
We watch as those who serve with consistency and excellence are pushed aside for those who shine for a moment.
We watch the board shift. And we ask: Was it worth the trade?

♟️ And Then There’s the Pawn
The pawn may seem small—limited in its moves, easy to overlook. But every good chess player knows:
A pawn, when protected and positioned well, can cross the board and become a queen.
Let that sink in.
How many times have we sacrificed a pawn because we didn’t see its potential?
How often have people been cast aside, labeled “unimportant,” only to rise in a new space with more power than we imagined?
Sometimes we toss the pawn and protect the queen.
But other times… that pawn was the queen in the making.

♛ The Queen Isn’t Everything
Yes, the queen is there. Dominant. Eye-catching.
But let’s not forget: she’s also vulnerable. And without her supporting pieces, she’s isolated.
A good player knows how to protect the queen.
A great player knows how to use every piece to its fullest potential.
Sometimes the best move isn’t the flashiest—it’s the wisest.

🕊️ Heaven’s Game Board Is Different
Thankfully, God doesn’t play by the world’s rules.
He doesn’t discard those who serve in silence.
1 Corinthians 12:22 reminds us:
“Those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.”
God sees the knight. He values the bishop. He honors the pawn.
And He specializes in turning what others throw away into something glorious.
So if you’ve ever felt like you were pushed off the board so someone else could shine—breathe.
God hasn’t forgotten your move.
Your quiet strength, your unseen sacrifices, your silent prayers—they’re all part of a divine strategy that no one can derail.
Let them protect their queens.
You just keep playing your piece with purpose.
Checkmate will come in God’s time.
