Prone to Wander

Spread the love

All day long, I was searching. Searching for a word that would shake me up — a message to pierce the fog that’s been hovering over my heart.

So I prayed. I listened. I even tilted my head like, “Lord, was that You?”

But nothing hit… until the closing hymn started playing.

🎶 “O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be…”

By the time we got to “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it”— whew! I was done for. That third verse didn’t just whisper to me… it grabbed me by the shoulders, spun me around, and said,

“Girl, I’m talking to YOU.”

Because yes, I’m prone to wander. Not out into the world, but away from the One my soul loves. Away from quiet time. Away from surrender. Away from that deep, steady peace that only comes when I’m fully wrapped in Him.

That line — “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love” — is one of the most honest confessions ever sung. It’s the songwriter admitting, “Lord, I love You — but I know me. My heart drifts. I get distracted. My devotion leaks.”

It’s not rebellion, it’s recognition. It’s realizing how easily we chase comfort over closeness, or noise over nearness. It’s the truth that even sincere hearts can slip into spiritual autopilot.

And that’s why the next line is so powerful:

“Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.”

And it was as if He gently asked back, “Do you know what that means?”

In my spirit I replied, “It means, Lord, I can’t trust my feelings to keep me faithful. So please, lock my heart in Yours.”

So right there, with a surrendering heart and teary eyes, I whispered my confession:

“Lord, here’s my heart. Take it. Seal it for Your courts above.”

It means asking grace to do the holding when your grip gets weak.

Because truth be told, I’m out here fighting to hold on to the God I love — and realizing… He’s the One holding on to me.

That’s what it means to be sealed — to let God’s love become the holy superglue that keeps your heart attached even when life tries to pull it loose.

So here’s my nugget for you today:

Don’t just fight to hold your peace or your faith. Ask God to seal your heart — tight — so even when you wander, His love pulls you home.
