Mommy… Is God Real?

Spread the love

Here I am driving to work, humming a tune and minding the road ahead, when Sarai broke the silence from the back seat with a question that made my heart pause. 😐

“Mommy… is God real?”

😳😳😳🤔🤔

Before I answered, I glanced in the rearview mirror and noticed something that made the moment even deeper.

Her little face was lifted toward the sky.

Her wondering eyes were searching… almost as if they were looking for Him.

She stared intensely out the window, scanning the fluffy clouds that floated across an orange-brown backdrop as the sun slowly rose into the morning sky.

It was as though she was hoping that if she looked hard enough…she might actually see God.

I wondered if the beauty of sunrise arrested her mind.

I didn’t rush to answer. Questions like that deserve space to breathe.

So instead I gently asked, “What do you think, Sarai?”

With childlike honesty she replied,

“I don’t know. I don’t see Him when I look up, and He’s not visible to me.”

That answer sat in the air for a moment. And in that moment, I whispered a quick prayer: Lord, help me answer this right.

If only she knew—God’s presence was already on display in that very sunrise, painted among the clouds.

Then I told her what I know.

“I know God is real because I feel Him in my heart.”

As though my response awakened a fond memory—or perhaps answered a question she had been quietly holding—she began to share something deeper.

She then shared something that left me absolutely speechless.

She said, “One night when you were sleeping very hard, I woke up afraid. And I heard a voice say, ‘Little girl, do not be afraid. I will keep you through the night.’”

Nuggeteers… I had no words.

None.

In that moment my heart did two things at the same time—it trembled and it rejoiced. I silently prayed that God will continue to speak to her, but even more importantly, that she will always hear His voice.

But as I thought about our conversation, something else struck me.

Sarai had already experienced God speaking to her… yet she was still asking if He was real.

And maybe that’s because faith and sight are not the same thing.

You see, she heard His voice that night when she was afraid.

But when she looks up at the sky, she still cannot see Him.

She cannot touch Him.

She cannot point and say, “There He is.”

And that is where faith begins.

The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 11:1 that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

In other words, we may not see God with our physical eyes, but the moments when He comforts us, speaks to us, and answers our prayers become the evidence that He is real.

Children are honest enough to ask the questions many adults keep quietly in their minds.

Yet when I think about Sarai, I realize something else—she is already building her relationship with God.

I’ve seen her stop out of nowhere and pray about situations.

Backed-up traffic?

She’ll say, “Let’s pray that God clears the road.”

If mommy says her body hurts, she will lay a little hand on me and pray.

And yes… sometimes she even prays for God to change my mind so I can buy her some French fries.

And right there… is a child who believes God exists.

Because you don’t talk to someone you think isn’t there.

You don’t pray to someone you believe cannot hear you.

So while she may not see Him physically, her little prayers reveal something deeper—she believes He is listening.

Maybe that’s how faith grows for all of us.

We ask questions.

We wrestle with what we cannot see.

But along the way, we keep talking to God… and He keeps answering in ways that remind us He’s real.

So Nuggeteers, let me ask you something:

Is God real for you?

Not just in theory.

Not just in church on Sabbath.

But in the quiet moments of your life—when you pray, when you worry, when you whisper a request only heaven can hear.

Because sometimes the greatest evidence that God is real…

…is the fact that we keep talking to Him.
