A Prayer that Changes

Spread the love

Here I am on a new reading book club journey again.

And as I tackle pages of the current book with my friends…some of its content arrests my mind.

You know that kind of reading that makes you pause mid-sentence?

The kind that won’t let you just skim and move on?

Yeah… that kind.

This time, it introduced me—or rather reintroduced me—to a man named Praying Hyde.

There’s a story about him that won’t let me go…

During a revival in India, Hyde prayed one simple prayer:

“Lord, give me one soul today.”

Just one.

Not a crowd.

Not recognition.

Just… one.

The day passed.

Nothing happened.

Night came.

Still nothing.

But Hyde didn’t move.

He stayed on his knees.

Pressing.

Pleading.

Waiting.

And somewhere between the silence and the surrender…

God answered.

One soul.

The next day, he asked for two.

And he didn’t just ask—he labored in prayer again.

And again, God answered.

But here’s the part that shook me…

Hyde didn’t just pray casually.

History says he prayed so intensely, so persistently…that his heart was physically affected.

Some accounts even say his heart shifted position because of the strain of his prayer life.

Let that sit for a moment…

When was the last time something in me shifted because I stayed in prayer?

Because if I’m honest…

Sometimes my prayers are quick.

Convenient.

Wrapped up neatly with an “Amen” so I can move on.

But Hyde?

He prayed until something moved.

And maybe that’s the invitation for us…

Not louder prayers.

Not longer prayers just for show.

But prayers that say:

👉 “God, I’m not leaving this place the same.”

👉 “God, do something in me before You do something for me.”

When was the last time you stayed in prayer a little longer than usual?

When was the last time you lingered in God’s presence…not because you had more to say,but because you didn’t want to leave?

So here’s my gentle challenge to you today…

Before you scroll.

Before you rush into the next thing.

Before life gets loud again…

Pause.

Find a quiet place.

And pray about one thing.

Take one burden.

One name.

One situation.

And bring it before God.

Not casually.

Not quickly.

But with intention.

With surrender.

With expectation.

And don’t just say “Amen” and walk away.

Sit there a little longer.

Listen.

Wrestle.

Wait.

Even when it feels silent.

Even when nothing seems to be happening.

Stay.

Because maybe the breakthrough isn’t just in the answer…

Maybe it’s in what God is trying to shift inside of you.

Some prayers change circumstances…

But the most powerful ones change YOU.

So today, my prayer is simple…

“Lord… teach me to pray like that.”

Because some prayers reach heaven…but the ones that linger… transform the heart.
