Letting Go at The Kitchen Sink

Spread the love

I was elbow-deep in suds when it happened. The clatter of a spoon dropping into the sink barely registered because my mind was already cluttered with much more than dishes.

The end-of-year school madness is real—data analysis, admin prep, closing reports, decisions about next year, home projects, ministry plans… the list just keeps growing.

And somewhere between rinsing and scrubbing, that all-too-familiar feeling began to creep in—

Racing thoughts.

A growing sense of being overwhelmed.

That familiar tightness in the chest.

The mental spinning wheel of doom.

The heavy breath of anxiety whispering, “You’re behind. You’re not doing enough. You can’t handle this.”

I was flustered. Pressured.

And honestly… anxious.

But then—ah, the beauty of God’s whisper.

In the stillness of that ordinary moment, God met me at my kitchen sink.

The Spirit gently brought a verse to mind.

A whisper above the noise:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

(Philippians 4:6, ESV)

I paused.

I let the water run.

I listened.

Because this is one of the greatest privileges of being a child of God: when the load gets heavy and life feels too big, I don’t have to carry it all. I’m not expected to have all the answers. I’m not required to fix everything.

I get to let go.

I get to trust.

I get to rest.

Because this—this moment of peace—is one of the beautiful privileges of knowing Jesus.

As Christians, we are not immune to stress, but we are invited into peace. We are reminded that when the treasure and trouble of life feel too heavy, we don’t have to carry it alone.

We get to pray.

We get to ask.

And we get to thank—even before we see the outcome.

The same hands that flung stars into space are capable of guiding my tiny, frazzled world. The same voice that calmed the storm with “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39) is still speaking peace over my to-do list.

It’s like God gently saying, “Give me what you’re carrying. Just do what you can, and I’ll take care of the rest.”

So that’s what I’m doing.

I’m letting go.

Not giving up, but releasing the burden of trying to manage it all on my own. I’ll show up, I’ll give my best, and I’ll leave the rest in the hands of the One who never drops the ball.

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3, NKJV)

So friend, if your soul feels cluttered, stop for a moment.

Turn your heart upward.

Tell God what’s on your mind.

Thank Him for what He’s already done—and what He’s about to do.

Then let go.

Because His peace isn’t based on how clean our to-do lists are…

It’s based on how close we stay to Him.

And He’s always right there—

Even at the kitchen sink.

As I washed dishes and surrender deadlines, I chose to say:

I will not be anxious.

I will do my part.

And then I will hand over the rest to God.

Because His shoulders are bigger than mine.

And His peace? Oh, it’s perfect.

So friend, if you’re standing at your own kitchen sink—or wherever your chaos brews—pause.

Take a breath.

And let go.

God’s got this.

And He’s got you, too.

  1. All our anxieties, and all our cares, let’s take them to the Master and leave them there… He said, my peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you… Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there and then experience the peace of God that surpassed all understanding…

  2. Praise God for His peace that he gives to those who seek him. Thank you Lord for calming my storms!
