Lesson from an Ant

I didn’t go to camp to get a lesson from bugs—but God had other plans.

It all started with one big ant. Then another. Then a whole army of them. Marching in through the crack of my cabin door like they owned the place. Red and black. Bold. Huge. Like they came straight from a Marvel movie.

I panicked. What if they bite? Are they poisonous? I wanted to run, but then—God interrupted my fear with a verse I hadn’t thought about in ages:

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise…” (Proverbs 6:6)

Wait, what? In that moment, God was telling me to pause for a moment and observe my fear; that these red monsters had a message for me.

There I was—trembling over ants—and the Bible was telling me to learn from them?

So I did.

I paused. Watched. Reflected.

Those ants weren’t chaotic or confused. They weren’t looking for a leader. They were on a mission.

Focused.

Purposeful.

Disciplined.

They had no commander, no overseer, no ruler—yet they moved like a unit, gathering, storing, building.

While I was busy freaking out, they were just doing what ants do.

And then came the kicker:

“How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?”(v. 9)

Ouch.

It was like God turned my ant invasion into a divine wake-up call.

Yes, the ants startled me—but maybe they were sent to stir me. To ask:

What am I putting off? Where have I been spiritually sluggish? Am I storing up the Word like an ant stores food? Am I moving in purpose—or waiting for someone to push me?

Ant Qualities Worth Emulating:

Initiative: No one had to tell them what to do.

Diligence: They weren’t wasting time.

Preparedness: They knew winter was coming and worked in the now.

Unity: They moved with common purpose.

So what’s the Spiritual application?

God is calling us to ant-like diligence in our spiritual lives.

To pray without being told.

To serve without being seen.

To prepare without needing applause.

To get up from spiritual sleep and get moving.

Ants may be small, but they carry a powerful lesson: Wisdom isn’t flashy. It’s faithful.

Next time you see an ant—especially one breaking into your cabin—don’t just reach for a broom.

Pause. Watch. Learn.

Then ask yourself:

Am I living like the ant… or lying like the sluggard?

Proverbs 6:6–9 – “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?”

  1. Im considering her ways… Such a beautiful reminder of how God can lead us though unseen. We just need to be in tune with Him to hear His voice and obey his commands. Thank you sister!

    • Amen, my sister! Yes—when we truly consider her ways, it reminds us how much God desires to lead us, even when the path isn’t clear. Being in tune with His voice makes all the difference. I’m so glad this spoke to you. Let’s keep listening, obeying, and walking closely with Him. Thank you for your sweet words and encouragement!

  2. What I got from this is, how one ant go and search and when he found food he ran and tell the others. I believe we are to have the same heart for our neighbors…go and share what we (have/ know) that they too can come and taste for themselves and see that God is good and be prepared for what is coming.

    • What a beautiful insight! I love how you connected the ant’s behavior to our call as believers. You’re absolutely right—just like that one ant who finds food and quickly brings the others, we’re called to go out, share the good news, and invite others to come and taste for themselves that the Lord is indeed good. What a reminder to live with urgency, love, and purpose—especially in these times. Thank you for sharing that perspective—it truly blessed me!
